About Dr. Neil Barkin

Recently retired from surgery, Neil J. Barkin, MD, brings a wealth of experience to the staff of Capitol Orthopaedics & Rehabilitation in Rockville, as a specialist in nonsurgical treatments for bone, joint, and ligament injuries.

Dr. Barkin completed his undergraduate studies at Union College in New York before pursuing his medical education at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons. He continued his general surgical studies at the University of Virginia and his orthopaedic studies through Harvard University’s Combined Orthopaedic Residency Program. Upon completion of his residency, he was named Chief Resident at what is now Brigham & Women’s Hospital.

Throughout his career, Dr. Barkin’s peers have consistently appointed him to positions of leadership and recognition, among them Chairman of the Suburban Hospital Orthopaedic Surgery Division, Chairman of the Emergency Ward Committee at Shady Grove Adventist Hospital, and both Chairman of the Legislative Committee and Secretary of the Montgomery County Medical Society.

In addition to his numerous accomplishments, Dr. Barkin’s most important qualification may be the empathy he has for his patients. Since undergoing replacements of both his hips in 2001 and 2007, he has remained fully active, enjoying a diverse range of athletic hobbies that include everything from cycling, hiking, skiing, and sailing to frequent games of tennis.

When out of the office, Dr. Barkin remains a perpetual jazz piano student and he treasures his time with his wife, Joan W. Barkin, MD, an accomplished Rockville pediatrician, their two children, and four grandchildren.
